Speed, Distracted Driving, and a Pandemic

Even during a time of lock-down, auto accidents are prevalent.

For many, decreased traffic meant stress free driving and higher air quality during the Covid-19 Pandemic. but statistics show a different spin on the roadway during these past few month.

Transportation officials at MassDOT, say that although traffic had decreased by 50% during April and May, accident fatalities increased during that time. In fact, fatality statistics actually doubled in April when comparing the number of drivers and the number of fatalities. Officials believe this increase may be due to an increase in speed along with distracted driving.

An open road void of the usual hustle and bustle may have proven to be too much of a temptation for some would-be racers. As for potential distracted driving, who remembers there was a new distracted driving law that started in March? So much has happened since it went into law that it has caused this “headline” story to disappear. The law places requirements for absolute hands-free use of one’s phone hoping to minimize accidents caused by mobile phone distractions.

Now, as summer has arrived in full force, and social distancing at home has subsided, people are heading back to work at a higher rate as each phase passes. It is important to drive responsibly and remember that many of your fellow drivers are not as familiar with their road skills after a 3 month sabbatical.
